Does Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Prevent Cavities?

Does Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Prevent Cavities?

Thinking Of Going Fluoride-Free? Here’s What You Need To Know!

In the quest for healthier living, a lot of us are looking for ways to swap out the synthetic ingredients in favour of more natural alternatives. One of the more common switches people consider? Ditching Fluoride in toothpaste. But we get it, moving away from traditional toothpaste can raise a few questions (and eyebrows).

The biggest debate?

Does Fluoride-free toothpaste actually work to prevent cavities? Let’s break it down and explore how you can care for your chompers naturally, without compromising your dental health.

So... What Is Fluoride Anyway?

Fluoride is a mineral found in rocks and soil, and it’s been added to most commercial toothpastes since the early 1900s. That’s because it’s been shown to help harden tooth enamel and reduce tooth decay by protecting against cavity-causing bacteria.

Sounds pretty good, right? But like many things in life, there can be too much of a good thing.

Why Do Some People Avoid It?

The main concern with Fluoride is overexposure - especially from swallowing it, which is more common than you might think (especially in kids). Excess Fluoride can lead to a condition called Dental Fluorosis, where teeth develop white or brown spots. Some consumers are also concerned about further potential health risks that can develop, such as skeletal fluorosis, arthritis and nephrotoxic or neurotoxic effects.

That’s why many people, including parents and those with sensitive teeth or skin, are turning to Fluoride-free options to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects.

But… Does Fluoride-Free Actually Work?

Great question! The key to keeping teeth healthy, Fluoride or not, is remineralisation. That’s just a fancy word for restoring the minerals in your enamel to keep teeth strong and cavity-resistant.

Fluoride is one way to do that, but it’s not the only way.

Say Hello to Calcium Hydroxyapatite

One of the most promising natural alternatives to Fluoride is Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA). This is a mineral that already exists in your teeth and bones, so your body knows it well! It’s been shown to help remineralise enamel, repair early-stage cavities and strengthen teeth… all without the risk of fluorosis.

In fact, some studies suggest it can be just as effective (if not more so!) than Fluoride.

At MooGoo, we use Calcium Hydroxyapatite in our Fluoride-Free Moothpaste, but not the nano kind. The Hydroxyapatite we use is micro in size, not nano. It measures in at around 5 microns, which means the particles are too big to be absorbed into your body or sneak past your skin barrier.

Gentle & Effective - Just How We Like It

Our Moothpaste is made for the whole Herd; kids, grown-ups and anyone who wants a clean, effective and gentle toothpaste. Here’s what you’ll find inside:

  • Vegan Calcium Hydroxyapatite to remineralise and protect enamel
  • Coconut and Taurine-based cleansers for a thorough clean without the harshness
  • Tapioca Starch for a smooth texture
  • No SLS (because your mouth deserves better)
  • Natural Stevia for a mild, pleasant taste, perfect for picky little brushers!

Ready to Make the Switch?

If you’re keen to go Fluoride-free, just make sure you’re choosing a toothpaste that still supports strong, healthy teeth. Look for one with a proven remineralising ingredient like Calcium Hydroxyapatite, and always check in with your dentist to make sure it’s right for your individual needs.
