Natural Tanning Products: How To Get A Healthy Tan Without Ageing Your Skin

There's something about a golden glow that just makes you feel good. Summer plans, beach days, that "just back from holidays" look. We get it. We love it too.

The catch? Getting that colour from the sun comes at a price your skin pays later. Think fine lines, sunspots and a much higher risk of skin damage.

The good news is you don't have to choose between a glow and healthy skin. Natural tanning products give you a bronzed look with zero UV exposure. In this guide, we'll explain how sunless tanning works, how to get a healthy tan that looks natural, and the simple habits that help you tan without ageing your skin.

The short version: A healthy tan is one you don't get from the sun. Natural self-tanners colour only the very top layer of your skin, so you get the glow without the UV damage. Just remember, a fake tan isn't sunscreen, so keep the SPF going every day.

Why A Sun Tan Ages Your Skin

Here's a fun fact that's actually not that fun. A tan from the sun is your skin's way of saying "help". When UV rays hit your skin, it makes extra pigment (melanin) to try to shield itself from more damage. That brown colour is a sign the damage has already started.

There are two types of UV rays to know about:

  • UVA rays reach deep into the skin. They break down Collagen and Elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and bouncy. Over time this shows up as fine lines, sagging and leathery texture. Think A for ageing.
  • UVB rays affect the surface of the skin. They're the main cause of sunburn. Think B for burning.

Both play a part in sunspots, uneven skin tone and skin cancer. Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of visible skin ageing, which is why dermatologists often call it "photoageing".

Sun exposure can also leave your skin dry and tight, as heat and UV draw moisture out and weaken your skin barrier. Not exactly the glowing look you were going for.

HAY MOO! Solariums are banned for commercial use in every Australian state and territory. Sunbeds use the same UV rays as the sun, just at a much higher dose.

How Do Natural Tanning Products Work?

Sunless tanning is surprisingly simple science. Instead of making your skin produce pigment, natural tanning products add a little colour to the very top layer of your skin (the part that naturally sheds every few weeks). No UV needed.

Our natural tanning products use two naturally derived tanning ingredients:

  • DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is a sugar that's often made from plant sources like sugar beets or sugar cane. It reacts with amino acids in the top layer of your skin to create a golden-brown colour. It's the same type of reaction that makes toast turn golden. We use it because it's the most well-studied self-tanning ingredient around.
  • Erythrulose is another naturally derived sugar that works the same way, just more slowly. It develops gently over a day or so, which helps the colour look softer and more even. We pair it with DHA because together they give a more natural-looking tan that fades evenly.

What we leave out

We made our tanning range for people with sensitive skin who usually steer clear of fake tan because of reactions. So we kept the formulas simple:

  • No mineral oils, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts.
  • No Parabens or Phenoxyethanol.
  • No colour guide, so there's less mess on your sheets and clothes.
  • No coconut scent trying to cover up the "fake tan smell".

Instead, you'll find skin-loving ingredients like Aloe Vera and Pro-Vitamin B5, which help your skin hold on to moisture while your tan develops.

Meet Our Natural Tanning Range

Everyone tans a little differently, and everyone has their own idea of the perfect application. So we made a few options. All of them are buildable, so you choose how deep you want to go.

Natural Tanning Mousse

Natural tanning mousse with Aloe Vera for a streak-free glow on sensitive skin

Our Natural Tanning Mousse is a light, creamy foam that glides on smoothly and dries in about 5 to 10 minutes. It's made with Pro-Vitamin B5 and Aloe Vera to help your skin hold on to moisture, which makes it a lovely pick for dry skin. You can rinse off after 2 hours, and the colour keeps developing for up to 24 hours.

Best for: Dry skin, first-time tanners and anyone who likes a creamy feel.

Natural Tanning Water

Lightweight spray-on natural tanning water for a fast-drying sunless tan

If you want something that feels like nothing at all, our Natural Tanning Water is it. Spray it on, blend it in, wait until it feels dry and get dressed. It's lightweight, fast drying and great for warmer weather when you don't want anything heavy on your skin.

Best for: Busy mornings, humid days and oily or breakout-prone skin.

Tanning Face Mist

A clear, self tanning face mist for a golden glow

Faces are fussier than bodies, and pores don't love heavy formulas. Our Tanning Face Mist is a non-comedogenic face tan made with Saccharide Isomerate to help skin feel smoother and plumper. Mist it onto a clean face and décolletage, and it sits nicely under makeup and sunscreen.

Best for: A glowing face that matches your body, without breakouts.

Gradual Tanning Cream

A non-smelly, natural, moisturising rapid tanning formula

Our How Now Brown Cow gradual tanning cream was our very first natural fake tan made for sensitive skin. It works like a daily moisturiser that slowly builds a soft glow over a few days.

Best for: A subtle, low-commitment glow you top up as you go.

Tanning Application Mitt

Reusable self-tan application mitt for an even, streak-free fake tan

Orange palms are nobody's friend. Our reusable Tanning Application Mitt helps you blend evenly and avoid streaks. It works with the Mousse, Water and Gradual Tanning Cream.

How To Get A Healthy Tan: Step By Step

A great fake tan is mostly about prep.

Follow these steps and you'll be the one people ask, "Where did you go on holiday?"

1. Patch test first

As with any skincare product, patch test a small area 24 hours before your first full application. This is extra important if you have sensitive skin.

2. Shave and exfoliate the day before

Tan clings to dry, flaky patches. Give your skin a gentle exfoliation the day before to create a smooth, even base. Shaving a day ahead also gives your pores time to settle, so you avoid that dotty look.

3. Moisturise the dry spots

Right before you tan, smooth a little light moisturiser over the areas that grab extra colour: elbows, knees, ankles, knuckles and the tops of your feet. Our Natural Moisturisers are a gentle pick for sensitive skin.

4. Apply in sections with a mitt

Work on clean, dry skin. Use your mitt to apply your tan in long, sweeping strokes, one section at a time. Start at your ankles and work up, using whatever's left on the mitt for lighter areas like hands, feet and your hairline.

5. Let it dry, then let it develop

Wait until your skin feels dry to the touch before you get dressed. Loose clothes are your best friend here. You can rinse off after 2 hours, and your colour will keep deepening for up to 24 hours.

6. Build it up (if you like)

Want more glow? Apply another layer the next day. Building slowly gives a more natural look than going dark in one go.

Bonus tip: Rinse your tan off with lukewarm water and pat dry. A soap-free cleanser like our gentle Milk Wash is kind to both your skin and your fresh glow.

How To Tan Without Aging Your Skin

Swapping the sun for a self-tanner is the biggest step. But here's the bit a lot of people miss: a fake tan doesn't protect you from the sun. DHA colours your skin, but it doesn't block UV. So your glow still needs a little backup.

Here are the everyday habits that help you keep your colour and your skin healthy:

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Yes, even with a tan, and even when it's cloudy. Use a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply every 2 hours outdoors. Our natural zinc sunscreens are made for sensitive skin and the whole family.
  • Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. Clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, shade and sunnies all add up. You know the drill, and it works.
  • Check the UV index, not the temperature. UV can be high on cool or overcast days. Sun protection is recommended whenever the UV index is 3 or above.
  • Keep your skin barrier happy. Hydrated skin holds a tan more evenly and looks smoother. A daily moisturiser helps lock in moisture.
  • Be kind to your face. The skin on your face sees the most sun. Pair your face tan with SPF and a gentle routine. If you're curious about supporting skin as it ages, our guide to a natural anti-ageing skincare routine is a great place to start.

How To Make Your Glow Last

Applying a natural body moisturiser to tanned skin to help a self-tan fade evenly

Your skin naturally sheds its top layer every few weeks, so every self-tan fades eventually. These simple habits help it fade slowly and evenly, without patches.

  • Moisturise daily. Dry skin flakes faster and takes your colour with it. One of our body moisturisers for sensitive skin helps keep skin soft and your tan even.
  • Go easy on the scrubbing. Skip harsh scrubs and exfoliating mitts while your tan is fresh. Save exfoliating for when you're ready to start again.
  • Keep showers lukewarm. Long, hot showers dry out your skin and speed up fading.
  • Pat, don't rub. Pat yourself dry with a towel after showering.
  • Top up when you need to. A light layer every few days keeps your colour looking fresh.

Natural Tanning FAQs

What are Natural Tanning products?

Natural Tanning products are self-tanners made with naturally derived tanning ingredients like DHA and Erythrulose, alongside gentle skin-loving ingredients. They give you colour without UV exposure. Ours are also made without mineral oils, Parabens or Phenoxyethanol.

Is there such a thing as a healthy tan from the sun?

Not really. Any tan from UV is a sign your skin has been damaged. The healthiest way to get a tan is with a sunless self-tanner.

How do I tan without aging my skin?

Skip the sun and solariums, use a self-tanner for colour and wear sunscreen every day. Since UV is a major cause of visible ageing, protecting your skin from it is one of the best things you can do.

Does fake tan protect you from the sun?

No. Self-tan doesn't contain SPF and doesn't block UV, so you still need sunscreen and sun-safe habits.

Can I use Natural Tanning products on sensitive skin?

Our Tanning Range was made for people with sensitive skin who usually avoid fake tan. Everyone's skin is different though, so always patch test first.

Will natural self-tan break me out?

We make our whole Tanning Range without mineral oils, which commonly cause breakouts. For your face, our Tanning Face Mist is non-comedogenic.

How long does a Natural Tan last?

Most self-tans last around 3 to 7 days, depending on your skin and how you care for it. Moisturising daily helps it fade evenly.

Can I use Natural Tanning products while pregnant?

We always recommend checking with your GP or midwife before using any new product during pregnancy.

The Moo-ral Of The Story
