Why Your Skincare Routine Needs A Serum

Why Your Skincare Routine Needs A Serum

If we had to choose one word to describe the skincare industry, it would be “overwhelming”. One magazine is telling you that 45-minute Glycolic Peels are an absolute MUST, whilst your Instagram feed is blowing up about Infrared Light Masks and 10-step evening routines. Sometimes it gets to a point where you start looking at your partner’s 5-in-1 shower wash with appreciation instead of disgust…ahh the simplicity! Throw some fussy, sensitive or easily irritated skin into the mix and you're heading for a headache.

If you’re trying to cut through the marketing hype and decide if serums are worth your while (and your hard-earned MOO-lah), the short answer is: YES! The long answer? It depends on what serum, and more specifically, what ingredients that serum is formulated with. But all ingredients aren't created equal, so there are a few things we suggest you keep in mind while perusing the skincare aisles in search of a serum (or any other skincare product for that matter):

Pretty Packaging

Just because something comes in fancy packaging, doesn’t make it technologically advanced no matter how shiny the box is. Just because a product comes in packaging covered in leaves and flowers doesn’t mean it's natural. It’s easy to assume that what packaging a product comes in reflects what’s inside, but packaging is all about creating the customer experience and perception, not necessarily in line with the quality of the formula. Sometimes the bottles cost more than the creams inside them! Shocking, but true. But, like the old sayings go: “never judge a book by its cover” and “it’s what’s inside that counts”.

Ingredients

Just because an ingredient sounds fancy (like Stem Cells from Swiss Apples of DNA from Immortal Jellyfish), doesn’t mean it's compatible with or useful to human skin. A lot of ingredients on the market are positioned to sound innovative and revolutionary, promising ‘never-before-seen-results’. Beware of hyped-up ingredients when you’re shopping for skincare, especially ones that don’t have any scientific studies to back up their efficacy. Also keep in mind that just because something has a higher price tag doesn’t mean the formula or the ingredients in them are of higher quality.

Delivery Systems

This is something we talk about a lot. Ever wonder why you aren't seeing the results you thought you would from that skincare product you've been using for a while? Most likely, the good ingredients aren't getting to where they need to be because they aren't always paired with an effective 'delivery system' to get them into the skin. Just because something is put onto the surface of the skin doesn’t mean it'll get absorbed. This means many good-quality, expensive ingredients end up sitting on top of the skin, unused and eventually washed off (a lot of money down the drain, literally).

Why Choose Our Active Serums?

We spend a lot of time making sure the delivery system for our active ingredients is effective so they can get into your skin and do the work they're supposed to. This adds some expense to our formulas, of course, but there’s no point in using expensive active ingredients if they aren't going to do you any good. When developing our serums, we went directly to the straight shooters - the ingredients that are well proven to actually work -  and created these 4 serums to tackle some top customer skin concerns:

- Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide to quench thirsty and dry skin.

- Vitamin C & Sepiwhite to brighten and even out skin tone.

- Bakuchiol (Retinol substitute) for skin renewal and stimulating collagen.

Argireline® Amplified Peptide to address lines and wrinkles at their source.

Ready to Upgrade Your Skin Routine?

Cleansing and moisturising your skin is a great start to ensuring long term skin health and reducing the signs of ageing, but the blessings of technology now offer us access to some pretty awesome ingredients that are proven to make a difference to your skin. Adding an active serum to your skincare routine after you cleanse and before you moisturise is the easiest and most effective way to start seeing some noticeable differences in your skin. As always, we like to keep things simple, straightforward, and fuss-free. A 3-step routine (cleanse, boost, moisturse) paired with some good old-fashioned consistency is all you need, because taking care of that beautiful face of yours doesn't need to be complicated.
