Ask the Herd Anything!
We’re here, lets chatSo, you’ve got the great job of dealing with nits; lucky you! But don’t worry we have you covered with the best head lice treatment for head lice removal and some nifty tips and tricks for headlice prevention.
Nice smelling, natural and undectectable! To help make the process a little bit easier for the nit carriers and the nit removers, we’ve developed a unique head lice treatment that stops lice and lice eggs in their little, tiny tracks. And because children are much more sensitive to strong smells than most adults, we have made our natural head lice treatment as nice-smelling as possible. Because nobody wants tears, most of all us!
Not only that, it’s completely undetectable after use so kids won’t go back to school smelling like they’ve been frolicking in a tea tree forest. This means no more judgey faces from the other parents at after-school pick up (phew!). Best of all, we’ve avoided all ingredients that we as parents are not comfortable putting on our children, and we think you may agree. Treating nits isn’t anybody’s favourite job but our nit cream makes it as easy as possible for both children and adults.
How do we know the smell and feel of a lice treatment is important? It’s safe to say we have a bit of experience from years of combing nits out of our 3 girls’ hair. Another cool tip? Use the combing time to bond with your kids…apparently it works for chimps. Or give them a book to read while you’re doing the hard yards. Don’t forget to wash bedding, hats, hair elastics, hairbrushes and clothes – sorry this service is not included. It may not be fun, but neither are head lice.

What is head lice?
Head lice are small, wingless, 6-legged, blood-sucking insects that want to live in your hair and feed on your scalp (no thank-you). There are nits (the eggs), nymph (a young louse) and louse (an adult lice).
What is the head lice life cycle?
An egg turns into an adult louse within 9 to 12 days and mature lice live for about three to four weeks, but before they die, they’ve had the chance to lay between 4-5 eggs a day. That’s a lot of nits.
How do you get head lice?
Head lice can be spread whenever there is direct contact of the head or hair with an infested individual. Lice can also be spread through the sharing of items like hats, towels, brushes, helmets, hair ties and even pillow cases and sheets.
What does head lice look like?
The nit is a whitish-yellow speck that is about 1 millimetre in length. It attaches itself firmly to an individual hair strand close to the scalp. Nymphs are usually between 1.1 and 1.3 millimetres, and tan or white in colour. Nymphs mature into adult lice within about 9 to 12 days. Mature adults don’t tend to grow larger than 2 millimetres, and female lice are larger than males.
Can head lice jump?
Head lice are excellent climbers and very fast runners but they cannot jump, swim or fly. They can however hold their breath for hours so swimming and showering doesn’t affect them.
Can head lice live on pillows and sheets?
Head lice can live on pillows and in sheets but only for 48 hours as they need to feed on human blood in order to survive and will only last 2 days away from the scalp.
What ingredients do you avoid and why?
Our natural head lice treatment is made without any harsh chemicals or insecticides. For starters, we don’t use Pyrethrin, Piperonyl Butoxide, or synthetic insecticides, as these can be harmful to your health as well as the environment. We also decided to avoid dimethicone and other silicones to protect our waterways.
Can I use the nit cream for head lice prevention?
Although our treatment is gentle and non-damaging, we wouldn’t recommend using it unless there is an active infestation.
Do I have to treat everyone in the house?
We strongly encourage every family member to be checked for head lice but we only advise using our head lice treatment when there is an active infestation. To check to see if there is an infestation grab your MooGoo Cream Conditioner and coat the hair with a thick layer, or use our Protein Shot Leave-In Conditioner, and comb through while sitting on the couch! Both will give you the slip you need. If you find at least one, it’s time for the Nick Off Nits Cream!
Do I need to spray my furniture and bedding?
Head lice are parasites and require human blood to survive. They are not environmental pests so pesticidal sprays for furniture and bedding are unnecessary, not to mention more harm than good. Vacuuming is the safest and best way to remove lice or fallen hairs with attached nits from upholstered furniture, rugs, stuffed animals and cars.
How can I tell if the nits are dead or alive?
Unfortunately, you can’t. Not only that, even if we could decipher what lice are alive and what aren’t, finding 10 dead nits guarantees nothing for the 11th. And low and behold, there’s an entire colony started again.
