Ask the Herd Anything!
We’re here, lets chatSo, you’ve scored the glamorous task of nit duty, lucky you! But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a natural head lice treatment that actually works and doesn’t stink out the house. We’ve spent many hours (and tears) combing through our own kids’ hair, so we know what matters. We created this treatment to make the process as gentle as possible.
This isn’t your average chemical-laden lice kit. Our Head Lice & Eggs Destroyer Kit uses a unique delivery system to help stun lice and their eggs, making them easy to trap and remove. It’s made with a blend of non-damaging natural oils like Coconut, Olive, Rosemary, Eucalyptus and Lavender, and we’ve kept the scent light and pleasant so your little one doesn’t head back to school smelling like a walking tea tree.
Best of all, we’ve avoided all ingredients that we as parents are not comfortable putting on our children, and we think you may agree. Treating nits isn’t anybody’s favourite job but our kit makes it as easy as possible for both children and adults.
Want to know more? Watch our video tutorial below on how to use our Head Lice & Nits Destroyer Kit:
Purified water, Isopropyl Myristate, Coconut Oil, Behentrimonium metilsulfate, Cetrimonium chloride, Glyceryl monostearate, Olive oil, Cetostearyl alcohol, Glycerol, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate, Cetyl alcohol, Lactic acid, Rosemary Oil, Melaleuca Oil, Eucalyptus Oil.
Because we make our products for our families, we have a strict ingredient philosophy that excludes ingredients like Parabens, Phenoxyethanol and penetration enhancers.
We show all of the ingredients we use in our products on our website, not just the pretty ones. That way you know exactly what's in each one, and can get in touch if you have any more questions.
Please be aware that the ingredients we use in our formulas may be updated occasionally and therefore vary from time to time. Please refer to the ingredient list on the product packaging for the most up-to-date and relevant list of ingredients.
What is head lice?
Head lice are tiny, wingless insects (yep, six legs and all) that make themselves at home in human hair and feed on the scalp. Not cute. There are three stages:
They’re not a sign of poor hygiene - just a super common part of school life and daycare.
What is the head lice life cycle?
Once a nit hatches (usually in 7-10 days), the baby louse becomes an adult in just over a week. Each female adult can lay up to 5 eggs per day. That’s a whole lot of uninvited guests in a short amount of time, which is why quick treatment is key.
How do people catch head lice?
Mostly through head-to-head contact - think hugging, leaning in for pictures or playing hairdressers. Lice can also be spread by sharing hats, helmets, hairbrushes, towels or pillows.
What’s in the Head Lice & Eggs Destroyer Kit?
Everything you need (except the lice, thankfully!):
It’s easy to use, low-tox and actually works - no synthetic chemical nasties needed.
What does head lice look like?
Can head lice jump?
Nope! They don’t jump, swim or fly. But they’re speedy little climbers and can scoot from strand to strand pretty quickly. And yes, they can hold their breath during a shower or swim, which is exceptionally rude.
Can head lice live on bedding and furniture?
Lice need human blood to survive. Away from the scalp, they usually die within 24-48 hours. No need for panic cleaning, a good vacuum of pillows, bedding, rugs, and car seats will do the trick. Skip the sprays too! They don’t work on lice and aren’t great for your indoor air.
What Ingredients do you avoid and why?
We skip the harsh stuff. No Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide or synthetic insecticides. No silicones like Dimethicone either, it coats the hair (leaving it limp) and doesn't break down in our waterways. Our formula uses natural oils and plant-based ingredients because we gentle can be effective!
Can I use the kit for head lice prevention?
Tempting, we know! But we only recommend using the kit when there’s a confirmed infestation. For regular lice-checks, use our Protein Shot Leave-In Conditioner and comb through. It’s a great way to keep an eye out (and makes detangling way easier too).
Do I have to treat everyone in the house?
Not unless they’ve got lice. Check each family member with a conditioner comb-through. If you spot even one louse or nit, it’s time to break out the kit for that person. No need to treat if they’re clear, just monitor closely.
Do I need to spray my furniture and bedding?
Head lice are parasites and require human blood to survive. They are not environmental pests so pesticidal sprays for furniture and bedding are unnecessary, not to mention more harm than good. Vacuuming is the safest and best way to remove lice or fallen hairs with attached nits from upholstered furniture, rugs, stuffed animals and cars.
Lice aren’t like cockroaches, so no. They don’t infest your couch or carpets as they require human blood to survive. A quick vacuum of the usual spots (bedding, soft toys, car seats) is all you need. They are not environmental pests so pesticidal sprays for furniture and bedding are unnecessary, not to mention do more harm than good.
How can I tell if the nits are dead or alive?
Unfortunately, you can’t tell just by looking. Some might be hatched, others might be duds, but the safest option is to remove every single one. That’s why a thorough comb-through is part of the plan. Missing just one can mean you’re back to square one in a few weeks.
