3 Dentist-Backed Tips To Protect Your Child's Teeth
by Dr. Vanessa Ribas, Holistic Family Dentist
At MooGoo, we believe healthy habits start small - with tiny hands, big smiles and a little help from Mum, Dad, or whoever's on brushing duty tonight. Just like we're fussy about what goes into our skincare, we're just as fussy about the everyday routines that keep our little ones healthy from head to toe. That's why we asked family dentist Dr. Vanessa Ribas to share her top three tips for keeping kids' smiles happy and healthy. Grab a cuppa, and let's dive in.
1. Brush twice a day for 2 minutes, and make it fun!
Children should brush morning and night for two full minutes, ideally around 30 minutes after eating, to thoroughly remove plaque.
It's also really important to make brushing a positive and fun part of the daily routine. Start by letting younger children watch their parents brush their own teeth. While Mum or Dad is brushing, they can have a go at brushing their own teeth too.
Then parents can take over and make it into a little game. You could say, "Let's see if there are any little bugs hiding where only my big eyes can find them!" This makes the parent helping with brushing feel less like a chore and more like something you do together.
For older children, using a two-minute timer can be really helpful. Two minutes can feel very different to a child than it does to an adult, so a timer helps them understand how long they actually need to brush.
Parents should continue to supervise and help with brushing until children have developed the dexterity to clean all the surfaces of their teeth thoroughly themselves.
2. It's not just how much sugar, it's how often they eat
Every time we eat, the pH in the mouth drops and teeth temporarily lose minerals. Saliva naturally helps replace those minerals and allows the teeth to recover, but this process takes time.
That's why it's important to have good spacing between meals and snacks, rather than children constantly grazing throughout the day. Frequent snacking means the teeth are repeatedly exposed to acidic conditions without enough time to recover, which can make them more prone to decay.
It's a good reminder that little bodies (and little mouths) thrive on simple, consistent routines rather than constant grazing - something we think about with skincare too. Just as we recommend a gentle, considered approach to what goes onto sensitive skin, the same "less is more, but make it count" thinking applies to snack time. A well-spaced routine gives teeth (and skin) the time they need to recover and stay healthy.
3. Start good habits early, including regular dental visits
Regular dental check-ups help us spot early signs of decay, monitor how the teeth and jaws are developing, and make dental visits feel like a normal part of life rather than something children only experience when there's a problem.
The same goes for skin - a quick check-in on what products your family is using, especially for babies and children with sensitive or Eczema-prone skin, can help catch irritation early and keep bath time as comfortable as possible. If your little one has particularly reactive skin, our Baby & Child range and fragrance-free options are designed with that extra-sensitive layer in mind. That way, gentle care becomes just another normal part of the routine, not something you only think about when a rash shows up.
Bringing it all together
Healthy habits, whether it's for little teeth or little skin, come down to the same simple ideas: keep it gentle, keep it consistent and keep it fun. A two-minute brushing game, a well-spaced snack plate and a regular check-up (dental or otherwise) all add up to happier, healthier kids over time.
