Retinol (Vitamin A) has been a fan fave among skincare aficionados for years now, and for good reason; the hype is real. It's a powerful ingredient that works by increasing collagen production and speeding up skin cell renewal. It’s best known for its anti-ageing properties such as smoothing fine lines, but it’s also helpful with pigmentation issues and blemish-prone skin. But unfortunately, this potent powerhouse can be quite irritating to those with sensitive skin. Redness, stinging and flaky skin are a few of the signs that your skin doesn’t react well to Retinol, and it also makes your skin more sensitive to sun exposure. Retinol also comes with a warning to pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding; which is a bit concerning. Even those who don’t have sensitive skin often react to it at first.

Here at MooGoo, we aim to make all of our products as gentle as possible and suitable for as many people as we can, especially the sensitive types (we mean skin, not feelings – but those are important too). But we also love things that are effective and Retinol is one of those special ingredients with a proven track record of results, but more often than not, it also comes with a hefty price tag. For a few years now we’ve had our heads buried in the research looking for natural ingredients that can pack the same anti-ageing punch as Retinol, and we think we’ve found one with Bakuchiol. How to pronounce it is a whole other story. We prefer to go with (bah-koo-chee-all) but the internet might tell you otherwise. This plant-based alternative is derived from the Psoralea Corylifolia plant and comes with some impressive antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which is probably why it has started to earn the moniker of “plant-based Retinol”. Clinical studies have found that when it comes increasing collagen production and speeding up skin cell renewal, Bakuchiol is just as effective as, if not better than, Retinol.

We made this serum because we wanted to offer an effective product that has the same benefits as Retinol but without the annoying and irritating side effects. Because Bakuchiol is gentle, non-irritating and suitable for all skin types, we had to have it. Other than Bakuchiol’s impressive CV, there’s much more to this silky serum than its star performer. Just like all of our other skincare products, we’ve packed this with an A-team of skin soothers such as Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and Natural Vitamin E, to name a few. You won’t miss Retinol anymore; Bakuchiol will soothe sad skin, fade out fine lines and kick dull skin to the curb.

Do serums go underneath or on top of moisturiser?

Serums go directly onto the clean skin, under your moisturiser. Apply directly to the skin after cleansing and allow it to soak in for a few minutes before following with your favourite moistures. We have a few.

How often do the serums need to be applied?

For best results, use your serum every night before bed before you apply your moisturiser.

Is this a face serum or an eye serum?

We like to keep things simple even if marketing can sometimes tell us otherwise and get us to believe we need a different product for every part of the body and even different parts of the face. All of our serums are made for your skin so rub it on whenever you like on your face and around the eye area. Feel free to use it on your body as well, we don’t discriminate.

Are serums safe to use around the eye area?

Our serums are safe to use around the eye area, however, we don’t think it will not feel great on the eyeball, so avoid contact with eyes. If product gets into your eye, simply rinse out with water. If using an oil, they do heat up to body temperature and can spread out across the skin. We recommend applying the serum to the orbital bone around the eye, not directly on the eyelids.
