5 Things Your Makeup Is Trying To Tell You

5 Things Your Makeup Is Trying To Tell You

Have you ever wondered why your makeup doesn't hold up throughout the day? Or maybe why your foundation creases and sinks into lines? How about why you have texture that wasn't there before makeup?

Most of the time, how our makeup looks actually has nothing to do with our makeup routine but everything to do with our skincare routine. Our makeup can be a mirror, reflecting your skin's needs. So here's a decoded guide as to what those makeup foes could be telling you about your skin.

1. Is your makeup slipping throughout the day or going shiny?

If your makeup is slipping and sliding, or turning shiny by noon, then it's likely your skin is oily or combination. Combat this by incorporating a light, gel-based moisturiser infused with skin-loving ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide into your routine.

Optionally, a chemical or physical exfoliant with BHA's will penetrate your skin and pores on a deeper layer. These ingredients will help balance hydration levels and regulate excess oil production. Don't forget to set your makeup with a powder for a long-lasting finish too.

2. Foundation sinking into lines?

If your foundation seems to settle into fine lines, it's not just about age - it could signal dehydration. A combination skin type can benefit from a hydrating serum enriched with Hyaluronic Acid to plump up your skin before makeup application.

Dry skin types can opt for nourishing oils like Rosehip, while a gentle, hydrating face cleanser is a must for all.

3. Seeing unwanted texture?

The biggest thing to remember is we ALL struggle with textured skin, it's what makes us human and what normal skin looks like. However, an excess of dead skin cells or breakouts can cause texture in places you haven't noticed before.

Incorporate chemical exfoliants containing AHA's & BHA's into your routine to unveil smoother, clearer skin. Pair this with a moisturiser suited to your skin type for a hydrated, radiant complexion.

    4. Experiencing separating or pilling?

Ever noticed your makeup separating like oil and water? It could be due to mixing water-based and silicone-based products (moisturisers, primers or foundations). Mixing the two bases can lead to separation, as silicone repels water. The answer? Check those ingredient lists! Ingredients that end in -Cone/-Methicone or -Siloxane indicate silicone-based ingredients.

If your makeup is pilling, this may be a sign that your products are mixing together before they have the chance to set. Try slowing down the process and wait a few minutes between applying your moisturiserSPF, and foundation. And remember, less is more! Overloading your skin with product can increase the likelihood of pilling, so apply with a light hand for a flawless finish.

      5. Makeup not lasting?

If your makeup doesn't seem to last the day, your skincare routine might need a tweak. While you don't need a 10-step skincare routine, tailoring your regimen to your skin's needs is the best advice we can give. Our go-to essentials are cleansers, exfoliants, moisturiser, and SPF. Consider adding a targeted serum or oil to address specific concerns such as dryness or pigmentation.

        Top Tip:

Always, and we mean always, apply SPF every morning, especially if using active ingredients like AHA's and BHA's! UV radiation places additional stress on the skin and using active ingredients can increase sensitivity to sunlight, increasing your risk of burning.

And while we're here, let's not forget the importance of removing your makeup at the end of the day. Trust us, your skin will thank you for it! Properly removing makeup ensures your pores stay clear and your skin can breathe freely overnight, paving the way for a refreshed complexion come morning.
