Benefits of a Natural Bath

Some pet parents think that if their pet isn't itchy or they don't seem to have sensitive skin, they don’t need to use natural shampoo or products made with natural ingredients. Itchy or not, a natural bath is the best way to keep your pet’s skin healthy. Why? Well, there are a few reasons.

First, as with humans our pets only get one skin, which is why we need to care for and protect it as best we can. That’s why it is better to take a natural approach to pet care and use only safe, natural and effective ingredients. We need to look for products that are actually good for their skin, rather than something that may cause harm or irritation. You wouldn’t believe how many harmful ingredients can be found in human and pet products. The majority of grooming products on the market contain synthetic fragrances and sulphates which can be highly irritating and can often cause skin conditions and problems such as dermatitis, allergies, itching, redness & irritated skin. We believe in the natural and safe care of pets. That means we only use natural ingredients that we know are safe, even when ingested. If you could lick 80% of your body you would like to have totally lickable ingredients, right?

Some of the ingredients we avoid are:

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) this detergent is used in almost all wash products. SLS is the ingredient that creates the foaming action but it can also cause irritation to the skin, dryness and in some cases even dandruff.
  • Added dyes or colourants are linked to serious health problems. Avoid brightly coloured liquids: natural colours in chemical-free shampoos usually range from an opaque white to a light yellow.
  • Added fragrance or perfumes derived from synthetic chemicals. Artificial fragrances are linked to allergies.
  • Parabens are inexpensive and used by many cosmetic manufacturers as a preservative. Natural preservatives exist and they work just as efficiently as chemicals preservatives. - Silicone creates a synthetic coating, leaving the hair (or fur) with that slippery feeling and leads you to believe that your hair (or pet’s fur) is being properly moisturised. This is not the case; Silicone can coat the skin and fur which can lead to irritation and product build-up.

So what do we use instead?

Our products only contain natural and lickable ingredients that are safe and healthy for pets. A favourite amongst our furry friends is the Natural Calming Shampoo. It is made using a combination of six gentle Coconut and Glucose-based cleansers rather than just one detergent (SLS), which can irritate the skin. Our gentle formula also includes nourishing ingredients such as Aloe Vera to help soothe and calm the skin. We have also added Colloidal Rice Bran instead of Oatmeal. Oatmeal has a great reputation as a soothing ingredient, many shampoo’s for itchy pets use Colloidal Oatmeal as the main ingredient because it has properties that comfort itching and it can help soothe their skin. However, allergies to Oatmeal seemed to be quite common, at least in humans and in animals that have a problem with grain which is why we opt for rice bran instead. Colloidal Rice Bran is proven to be great at calming delicate skin and is even used by MooGoo for the baby wash. This ingredient is also rich in antioxidants and acts as a skin protectant.

Our Natural Nourishing Conditioner is formulated with natural, edible oils like Jojoba Oil that both moisturise the skin and condition the coat. We also use Piroctone Olamine for its non-irritating, anti-yeast and anti-bacterial properties. Our Fragrant Oil is Phthalate-free and is the same one that we use in the MooGoo formulas. It will soothe the skin leaving your pet smelling nice, without any allergies or reactions. Did you know? Our Natural Nourishing Conditioner can be left on the coat to help the fur and skin to absorb the conditioning ingredients.

Why should you read the ingredients list?

It would surprise most pet owners that products for pets often do not show the ingredients. To us it seems so obvious that pet owners need to know what they are putting on their pet’s just like with human products, but most pet products don’t show ingredients. Also, some things that are fine for humans, like Zinc in sunscreens, are not so good for pets. So why isn’t it on the label? Sometimes they do list the ingredients but it’s even scarier to read what they are actually putting on those products. For example, dog toothpaste and mouthwash are mainly sugar.

We are passionate believers in letting pet owners know exactly which ingredients we use in our products. That way, owners can research the ingredients themselves to make sure they are healthy for their pets. That’s why we list all of our ingredients and on our website, so you can read why we use them. Next time you go to your favourite pet store, check how many products list their ingredients and check them out to see what you are actually using on your beloved furry friend.
